A History of Love Leading to Action
The Christ Child Society was founded by Mary Virginia Merrick in 1887 in the Washington, D.C., area out of Merrick’s deep Catholic faith and dedication to helping others.
Despite having severe physical limitations, Merrick devoted her life to seeing the Christ Child in every child and serving children in need. Merrick’s first act of giving — making clothing for an expected infant of a needy family — became the foundation for today’s layette program.
Serving Children and Families in Omaha Since 1906
In 1906, Christ Child Society of Omaha was founded by Stella (Hamilton) Stapleton, making it the first chapter outside of Washington, D.C. Since then, the Omaha chapter has remained a part of the national organization.
More than a century later, CCSO continues to honor Mary Virginia Merrick’s generosity and strong belief in selfless service to others. CCSO continues to follow Merrick’s legacy of using love, compassion, and community engagement to change the lives of children in need. Every CCSO program supports the health, well-being, and success of the child.
Rooted in Faith, Open to All
Since our beginning, we have carried forward a faith-filled tradition: not to preach, but to serve. We express our values through humble action rather than words.
While our foundation is Catholic, we do not ask those we serve about their respective beliefs or religion – we simply meet people where they are, with compassion and dignity.
Our long-term goal is to make a multigenerational impact and ultimately strengthen our community through service to children and their families.
Volunteers Are Central to Our Success
Christ Child Society of Omaha relies on donors, auxiliary members, volunteers, and board members to carry out our mission. Many of these volunteers have recruited their friends and family to carry on the tradition of serving the needs of children. These multigenerational supporters are a vital part of keeping the organization moving forward. Together, we can humbly and faithfully build a stronger community for children and families.
