How the Christ Child Society Began

Mary Virginia Merrick started the Christ Child Society in 1887 in Washington, DC, providing layettes to babies born at Christmas time. Though paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, she resolved to do something every day for the Christ Child and encouraged family and friends to join her efforts. Today, 5,000 members in 44 chapters across 19 states and the District of Columbia are dedicated to making a difference in children’s lives, offering basic needs support delivered with love and respect. Miss Merrick’s life is currently being studied by the Catholic church for possible canonization as a saint.

The History of the Omaha Chapter

The Christ Child Society Chapter of Omaha is one of the oldest chapters in the United States. It began at the start of the 20th century by Stella Hamilton (later Stella Stapleton), who recognized the needs of children and families in our own community. Over the past 120 years, Christ Child has evolved to meet the changing needs of families and neighborhoods in Omaha. It has served infants and children, immigrants, single mothers and the elderly.

The list of women and men who have served as volunteers and leaders, or benefited from Christ Child programs is long. If you look through our history files, chances are you’ll recognize family members or neighbors who have been involved over the years. Two Omaha women have even served as Presidents of the National Christ Child Society! We can feel very proud of our heritage as Christ Child Society of Omaha.

Since our founding in 1906, many notable Omaha leaders have served as Christ Child President. We are forever grateful for their service.
